How Choosing the Sakamoto Font Transformed My Small Business Branding

When I launched my small candle-making business last year, I focused on perfecting the scent, the wax blend, and the packaging. But no matter how great the product looked, something felt off. My branding didn’t quite match the warm, natural aesthetic I wanted to project. It wasn’t until I discovered Sakamoto—a bold, brushed display font—that everything clicked into place.

A Fresh Look for Candle Jars and Labels

One of the first places I noticed the impact was on my candle jars. I had been using a generic sans serif font for the scent names and descriptions, which made the labels feel flat and forgettable. After switching to Sakamoto for the scent titles, the labels gained a handcrafted, artistic quality that matched the product inside. The font’s brushed texture and bold presence gave the packaging a more intentional, boutique-style look.

What I loved most about Sakamoto was how it felt both modern and organic. It’s not overly decorative like some script fonts, but it still carries a sense of personality and warmth. That made it perfect for small touches like “Hand-poured in [City]” stamps and thank-you notes tucked into each box.

More Than Just a Pretty Font

Typography is often overlooked in small business branding, but it plays a big role in how customers perceive your brand. A clean, consistent font choice can make your products feel more professional and trustworthy. Sakamoto helped me achieve that balance—bold enough to stand out, but not so stylized that it became hard to read.

I used it across a variety of materials: from product labels and packaging inserts to social media posts and digital ads. Each time, it added a level of polish that made my brand feel more cohesive. Whether I was designing a new Instagram story template or printing out new business cards, Sakamoto became the visual thread tying everything together.

Where Sakamoto Shines Best

It’s important to note that Sakamoto works best as a display font. That means it’s ideal for headlines, short phrases, logos, packaging titles, and decorative accents rather than long paragraphs. On my candle tags and product packaging, it looked fantastic for the main scent name and brand logo. But for longer descriptions or care instructions, I paired it with a clean sans serif font to keep things readable.

That brings up an important point: font pairing. Sakamoto pairs beautifully with minimalist sans serif fonts like Montserrat or Lato, which provide contrast without clashing. If you're going for a more elegant or feminine look, a light script or handwritten font can also work well as a supporting typeface.

Consistency Builds Trust

Before using Sakamoto, my branding felt scattered. I was using different fonts for different platforms, and it showed. My Instagram feed didn’t match my packaging, and my website looked disconnected from my product labels. Once I standardized on Sakamoto for headlines and key visuals, everything started to feel more unified.

Customers began commenting on how “put together” my brand looked, especially on social media and packaging. That’s the power of typography—it shapes first impressions and affects how seriously people take your business. Even though I’m still a one-person operation, using a premium display font like Sakamoto helped me look more established and professional.

Practical Tips for Using Sakamoto

If you’re considering Sakamoto for your small business, here are a few tips I’ve learned from using it across different materials:

Real-World Uses for Small Businesses

Here are just a few ways I’ve seen Sakamoto elevate different small business materials:

  1. Bakery boxes and cupcake tags – The brushed texture gives baked goods a handmade, artisan feel.
  2. Skincare and beauty product labels – Adds a premium, spa-like aesthetic without looking over the top.
  3. Café menus and drink tags – Works well for menu titles and special offers.
  4. Handmade product packaging – Perfect for boutique-style tags, stickers, and swing tags.
  5. Social media graphics and banners – Helps your visuals stand out while maintaining a cohesive brand identity.

Why Typography Matters for Branding

Typography might seem like a small detail, but it has a huge impact on how your brand is perceived. The right font can make your business look more trustworthy, creative, or professional. Sakamoto gave my candle brand a distinct personality and made every piece of communication—from packaging to Instagram stories—feel intentional.

If you're updating your brand visuals or launching a new product line, don’t overlook the power of a strong display font like Sakamoto. It’s more than just a font—it’s a design asset that can elevate your entire brand identity and help your business stand out in a crowded market.
